The Institute of Medicinal PlantDevelopment (Hereinafter referred to as IMPLAD), affiliated with the ChineseAcademy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), wasestablished in August 1983. The headquarters are located in ZhongguancunScientific and Technical Zone, Beijing, with branches respectively distributedin Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, Xinjiang, Chongqing, Guizhou, Hubei and researchcenters in Lishui, Liaoyang and Tibet. As the only one national researchinstitution of public service specializing in protection, development andutilization of medicinal plant resources, IMPLAD is also the well-knowninstitution focusing on medicinal plant research at home and abroad, designatedas WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine.

Taking it as the goal to support, guide theChinese Medicine Resources and the sustainable utilization of Chinese medicinalplant resources as well as promote sustainable development of traditionalChinese medicine, IMPLAD focuses on tackling the hot issues and difficultproblems in medicinal plant research, meeting the major demands of the country,society and industry on the national level through system integration andresource sharing. IMPLAD has been dedicated to the building of thecomprehensive and renowned internationally institute in the field ofconservation of Chinese medicine resources, especially taking up the leadingrole in China

Presently there are 368 staff, including 1member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 nationally recognizedscientist, 1 Qi Huang Scholar-National Millions of Talents Project ofInheritance and Innovation of TCM, 4 National-level experts with outstandingcontributions, 5 Scholars from “Millions of Talents Project”,1 National Leading Talents Project, and 4 tenure-track faculty.Among them, we have the founder of Pharmacophylogenetics, Professor XIAO Peigen(member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, also called “the living TCM dictionary”), Professor XU jintang, who specializesin Gastrodia (TIAN MA), Professor LIU Tiecheng specializing in AmericanGinseng, Professor ZHOU Qingnian specializing in Fructus Amomi (SHA REN), andProfessor CHEN Weiping, expert in introduction of South China medicine.Overall, IMPLAD has a team of highly educated and energetic Chinese medicineresearch scientists.

Obedience to the institute motto “Truth seeking and Scientific Development”, all the staff have inherited the bestof the past and are continuing the innovation, in the wake of recent changesand development seen over the past years. We are putting forward theconservation, sustainable utilization and application of medicinal plantresources, pressing ahead with the building of complete innovation systemcovering the areas of Chinese Medicine Resources, Cultivation of MedicinalPlants, Natural Medicine Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biotechnologyand other related subjects. Guided by the large demands and supported by thescientific innovation, IMPLAD is constructing the national S&T innovationsystem in medicinal plant research, having high international influence.

IMPLAD attaches much importance toscientific innovation and building of bases as well as platforms. Since itsfoundation, the institute has undertaken more than 1300 national S&T keyprojects and national natural science funding with nearly 1.16 billion RMByuan, and besides, over 5700 papers have been published, including over 1026SCI papers and 2 national awards during the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan period.IMPLAD has been also playing the role of high-end think tank by involving indrafting over 100 provincial and ministerial level plans and monographs. Wehave finished more than 100 monographs and have been granted 226 inventionpatents. Except that, we have succeeded in the introduction and large-scaleproduction of Gastrodia (TIAN MA), American Ginseng, Rhizoma Coptidis andFructus Amomi(SHA REN), and carried out training as well as guiding cultivationof medicinal plants as well as R&D of new drugs, covering over one hundredmillion mu of cultivating bases with potential economy value of more than tenbillion Yuan. As member of Committee of TCM and Natural Medicine, ChinesePharmaceutical Association, Committee of R&D and Consultation of ChineseMedicine, CCMR, IMPLAD has been playing the leading role in the field byproviding important industry-university-research platforms of exchange andcooperation.

Following the concept of academic eliteeducation of PUMC, IMPLAD has formed a characteristic training system ofmulti-disciplinary integration in TCM research, supported by the NationalMedicinal Plant Garden System. It has two disciplines including Pharmacognosyand Chinese Materia medica which are both authorized to offer master degreeprogram and Pharmacognosy is discipline authorized to offer doctoral degreeprogram. Chinese Materia Medica ranked third in the Chinese discipline rankingof Shanghai Ranking (third-party evaluation institution) in 2017. Pharmacognosyhas been approved as the Key Discipline in Beijing. Medicinal Botany has beenapproved as the Key Discipline by State Administration of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Pharmacology and Toxicology and Plant and Animal Science disciplinesentered the top 1 ‰ and 1% of ESI respectively. IMPLAD has quite a few key labsincluding National Engineering Lab for Breeding of Endangered MedicinalMaterials, International S&T Cooperation Base for the SustainableUtilization of South-China Medicine Resources, Substance Base and ResourceUtilization of Chinese Herbal Medicine Key Lab (Ministry of Education), Key Labof Chinese Medicine Resources Conservation (SATCM), Engineering Research Centerof Chinese Traditional Medicine Resources (Ministry of Education), BeijingMunicipal Key Lab for Innovative Drug Discovery of Chinese Medicine (NaturalDrugs) and Translational Medicine, Hainan Key Lab for Conservation andDevelopment of South-China Medicine Resources, National CompoundLibrary,National Alliance of Medicinal Plant Gardens, National TechnicalPlatform for Chinese Materia Medica and Natural Drugs, National Medicinal PlantGene Bank(Beijing, Hainan), National Technical Service Platform for ChineseMedicinal Materials Production, National Traditional Chinese Medicine QualityStandard Database and National Seed Gene Bank etc.. In addition, we have a teammade up of 118 graduate supervisors, including 43 doctoral supervisors and 75master supervisors. At present, there are 253 graduate students and more than150 joint training students. Since 2002, 1167 doctoral and master's degreestudents have been trained. 122 postdoctoral students were trained in theinstitute.

As WHO Collaborating Centre for TraditionalMedicine, and member of The World Academy of Sciences(TWAS), IMPLAD has beenactively involved in academic exchange at home and abroad, and has establishedcooperative relationship with many academic institutions from more than 60countries including USA, the UK, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea andLuxembourg etc.since its foundation. Also, IMPLAD has been graduallystrengthening cooperation with countries or regions along the Belt and Road.China-Russia, China-Cambodia, China-Mongolia Joint Laboratories have been builtup successively during these years. More than 60 researchers went to somecountries and regions like USA, Britain, South Korea and Hong Kong SAR fortraining, study or cooperative research. About three hundred researchers havebeen sent abroad to participate in international conferences and academicexchanges. We have hosted the training programmes for more than fiftyresearchers from such countries as the UK, Canada, Austria, Luxembourg, Peru,Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Vietnam and Philippines. And besides, we have sofar hosted more than 4500 person-time visitors from abroad including officials,scientists and business persons. Over the years, the institute has hosted andco-organized successfully quite a few international conferences, including theThird and the Ninth International Congress on Ethnopharmacology,WHO Consultation Meeting on Key TechnicalIssues for herbal medicines with reference to interaction with other medicines,the 1st Seminar on Safety and Quality Control of Chinese Medicine,International Conference & Exposition on Traditional Medicine and 6thMeeting of the Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine etc., whichprovide important platforms for academic exchange among scientists home andabroad to share their achievements and information, putting forward theconservation, utilization and development. The institute has establishedsubstantive cooperative relations with a number of universities and researchinstitutes at home and abroad. In collaboration with Tianjin Institute ofPharmaceutical Research, we sponsored the first English journal in the field"Chinese Herbal Medicines”. In addition, IMPLAD participates in the TCM schemes between Chinaand Europe, funded by EU FP7 and Ministry of Science and Technology, whichprovides graduate students and researchers more opportunities of internationalexchange and cooperation.

Over the years, a great number ofscientific achievements come out of the labs, providing positive support to thedevelopment of Chinese Medicine. We have succeeded in the introduction andlarge-scale production of Gastrodia (TIAN MA), American Ginseng, RhizomaCoptidis and Fructus Amomi(SHA REN), which have created an accumulated economicprofit. Except that, we have established strategic relationship with someprovinces including Guizhou, Yunnan, Ningxia, Hainan, Shanxi and Hebei,carrying out further cooperation in cultivation of medicinal plants as well asR&D of new drugs, and covering over one hundred million mu of cultivatingbases. The work of poverty alleviation through science and technology is quitefruitful and highly recognized by the government. IMPLAD has been activelyinvolved in the poverty alleviation, by leading the establishment of theNational Health Commission's designated poverty alleviation expert guidancegroup for the Chinese herbal medicine industry, and undertaking the tasks ofpairing assistance to poverty-stricken counties entrusted by National HealthCommission, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas and the NationalNatural Science Foundation. Poverty alleviation areas cover 18 provinces andautonomous regions, helping 36 national poverty counties to achieve povertyalleviation.

On the new journey of striving for the 14thFive-Year Plan, IMPLAD will continue to be fearless of difficulties, forgingahead to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation to realizeChinese dream, and to write a new chapter for the construction of the core baseof the S&T innovation system of medicinal plants in China.
